| Welcome to our website which will provide you with some interesting background and insights into our organization. I am Marian G. Cummins, President and C.E.O. of Children, Incorporated. |

| It is my sincere hope you will take a moment to explore our site and allow us to share with you our important work of assisting impoverished children here in the United States and abroad. |

| We are celebrating our 42nd Anniversary this year and I am proud to say that I have been a part of this organization for 35 of those wonderful years! Our enrollment has grown to 16,000 children in over 300 projects in 24 countries worldwide. I have had the privilege and pleasure of working closely with Jeanne Clarke Wood, our founder, who was able to instill in me her same principles and desires to make this a better world for the many impoverished children of the world. And, to remember that only through the kindness and generosity of our sponsors and contributors are we able to provide this much needed assistance to the children enrolled on our program. We have traveled the world, together, visiting projects and seeing, first hand, the desperate need. Lessons that could not be learned from a textbook and sights one could never imagine. There are so many children here, in the United States of America and abroad who need our help! |

| It has been wonderful to see the number of children on our rolls grow to a new level over these forty years but there are still so many children in the world who need our help. | Our History |

Children, Incorporated was founded in 1964 by Jeanne Clarke Wood. Compassion for needy children was bred in her, as her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. Calvitt Clarke, were noted philanthropists during their lifetime. The beginning of Children, Incorporated was a modest one, and the first youngsters Mrs. Wood helped were from Guatemala. On a visit to Guatemala in 1964, she had photographed 95 poverty - stricken children and had written accounts of the miserable circumstances in which each child existed. Immediately upon her return to Richmond, Virginia, her hometown, Mrs. Wood began to seek help for the 95 little Guatemalans. She opened an office in her own home and by writing letters and through magazine advertisements she told of the children's plight.
In the spring of 1971, Mrs. Wood made a second trip to Guatemala. During the lapse of time between her two visits there - from 1964 to 1971, barely seven years - her program of help to children, begun on such a small scale, had flourished. So, from fewer than 100 children in three small projects, Children, Incorporated now has over 16,000 children in 300 projects in 24 countries around the world. |

Our organization is based on long-range assistance to needy children here in the United States and in 24 other countries around the world, where we help the children through already established orphanages, schools, and welfare centers.
I hope to find sponsors for the hundreds of youngsters on our waiting list. Children, Incorporated believes that its sponsorship plan helps understanding, friendship and goodwill between the peoples of the world and that the children assisted become ambassadors of peace. |
